One of the most impressive technologies when it comes to warships is the aircraft carrier. These monsters are a testimony of how far technology has come. Fighter jets can now touch down softly on huge vessels at high frequency in the middle of the ocean. Amazing, isn’t it? For multiple jets to land on one ship in the middle of an ocean.
How big! This ship must be pretty amazing. One bad side though to this is the fact that some jelly fish get sucked up from the ocean into the vessels, causing some damage. But that is soon to end as Chinese scientists have found a way that potentially will tackle this challenge.
It is rather disturbing to hear that a boneless animal can wreak so much havoc on a metallic warship that is adorned with a lot of weaponry including fighter planes. in 2006, then USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier ran into a swarm of jelly fish and the mechanics on that ship were unfortunate to get gummed up. Actually, what happens is that, as part of the carrier’s cooling system, the ships take in water from the ocean. But, with this water a bunch of jellyfish come with the water and they clog the intake system which in turn overheats the ship’s system.
Aside from its effect on the ships, the effect of jellyfish sting on humans can be pretty bad. If not taken care of on time, jellyfish sting can take life in a matter of minutes. This is why it is even more dangerous to have jellyfish swarming into or around war vessels. Tan Yehui, a Chinese researcher said once that the unfortunate incident that occurred with the American ship can also happen to the Chinese aircraft carriers. And to prevent a reoccurrence of the 2006 episode, scientists have come up with a new technology that will be attached to Chinese warship.
This new invention is called the “jellyfish shredder”. It works exactly as its name suggests. It comes in the likeness of a large net that traps the jellyfish and also sharp blades that disembodies the boneless creatures. Animal lovers or advocates need not worry as these creatures do not have the kind of brains that cause extreme pain.
There are so many complains as regards the effect of this shredder. Some people worry about loose jelly fish tentacles floating to shore and stinging people while others worry about its effect on the water composition. But, these talks and worries aside, one must say that the jellyfish shredder is an extremely innovative tech. that is solving a surprising problem.
Jellyfish has been a recurring problem in the ocean not just for the warships, and Korea once sent a killer drone to shred all the jellyfish on its coast lines. Recently, in Florida, over 800 people were stung by jellyfish. This proves the point that jellyfish is fast becoming a problem if it is not already regarded as such.
