Fashion At The Olympic Opening Ceremony In Rio

The opening ceremonies of the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio were full of emotion, color, meaning, and fashion. Athletes from all over the world put their best foot forward as they paraded out onto the floor of the convention center with pride. The opening ceremonies were a mixture of complex movement, art that created reason, and fashion to show the spirit and personality of every country participating in the Olympics this year. From stripes and plaid to outlandish characters and over to dazzling silver sequins, one of the biggest talks of the town was the fantastic fashion choices peppering the convention.

Gisele Bundchen dazzled the crowd of the opening ceremonies by taking one last walk down the catwalk. Outfitted in a flowing silver sequined gown with a split shear up her thigh and five-inch stilettos, Bundchen had all eyes on her. Alexandre Herchcovitch made this stunning Brazilian supermodel shine as she gave her favorite catwalk strut to the bossa nova sounds of “Girl From Ipanema.” Even amongst the grit and glamour, she brought to the Olympics, Ms Bundchen, supermodel and wife of legendary football player, Tom Brady, was just proud to represent the hundreds of athletes who would bring their talent and the fashion forward in just a moment.

The Athletes

For the fashion choice of almost all of the 2016 Olympic athletes, Blazers lead the way into the arena. Canada marched in hopeful in red Dsquared2 blazers with their signature maple leaf emblem stitched on them. The United States excitedly took the walk in their Ralph Lauren blue blazers and striped t-shirts, an outfit you can purchase from RL for a meager $700. Choosing to shy away from the blazer and bring back a little funk was South Africa with their green and yellow track suits and matching sneakers. But don’t forget Burundi who took a look of traditionality with a modern flair walking in with traditional African dress, covered in leopard print, and sporting bright colored sneakers. The athletes from around the world are also prepared to give an amazing show of fashion at the closing ceremonies as well.

The Worst

From Croatia’s checkerboard outfits to Sweden’s shiny neon uniforms, not everyone gets a gold medal for fashion this Olympic Season. Russia, though in their defence were trying to keep warm, had probably the worst opening ceremony outfits out there. They paired grey, with a different shade of grey, with an overcoat in a fantastic shade of….grey. Luckily they threw a maroon cardigan on to spice things up a bit. Maybe they opted for grey because China decided to put their men in red blazers with rainbow ties and their woman in mustard colored blazers, calf-length skirts, and old lady flats. I guess not everyone could be a fashion icon this year.
