Have you ever thought and wondered what is underneath the ground of your house? Dirt, you surely think. However, sometimes you might be surprised to find something spectacular hidden under the ground of your house. And that is exactly what happened to this man when he discovered what was underground in his backyard. After finding the original plan of his house, he noticed something very peculiar that he hadn’t noticed before. It will shock you!
To discover what was hiding underneath the ground, he brought on board a metal detector expert for the job. The expert marked the ground in two spots, where he believed the surprise underground might be.
The man was curious and had his ideas what could be underground. Buried treasure, he wondered. Or a time capsule? Anything was possible. He started to dig. What he found was a metal object, although because of all of the dirt covering it, he still wasn’t sure what it was.
What he discovered as he kept on digging, was a metal lid. He still wasn’t quite sure what the lid was a cover to. Apparently the lid was extremely heavy to lift, but he was eager to know what was underneath it.
When he lifted the cover, he discovered various objects. He still was unable to make sense of them. They looked like blades, and were those stairs? In order to get a better look, he wanted to dig more dirt out of the way so he could crawl inside.
According to the map –of the house that he had found, he figured that this thing underground could be a bomb shelter. Was somebody fearing an apocalypse? The house plan wasn’t very exact in showing this tunnel and staircase. Whatever this was, it hasn’t been touched in years.
So far, it seemed like a bomb shelter with some a type of electric fan. The person who built this must have planned to be down there for a long time.
The man wanted to clean up the staircase, so that he could carry out the investigation safely. He had a lot of rubble to clear. He used buckets to clear away the debris and emptied them outside.
After hard work and labor, he managed to clear the staircases. This gave him a better view of the structure to determine what on earth it could be.
The man decided to recruit his friends’ help, that way he could have some backup if the ground collapsed and he was trapped underneath. First things first, the group wanted to build a safer entrance to the shelter. So they added more concrete and rebuilt it.
The area clearly hadn’t been touched in years and the men had a lot to work to do.And once they finished creating a more secure entrance, they placed steel rods for added security.
The process took time but the men knew that they were about to make a crazy discovery.
After they finished securing the entrance, they added concrete to the outside of the shelter. Adding the concrete was critical, though it was very time consuming and hard work.
In order to protect the inside of the entrance from damage, the men placed a SonoTube cardboard shape inside. Then their next step was to add a conduit for electricity. They didn’t know how long they were going to be down there
They were starting to see the progress of their work. But they still had way more to go! Also because of the hot weather, they decided to cover the area with a tent so they would have some shade.
The man’s backyard started to look like the site of an archaeological dig. The tent was keeping the rain out of the work area.
The next step was to add an air vent pipe so that they would be able to breathe underground. There was definitely progress to be seen, but they had much more work to do.
Their next step was to fill in the gaps with concrete in order to make the structure sturdier. They did their work very thoroughly and decided to put concrete in the upper forms too. They wanted everything to be as secure as possible.
The project was quite filthy, as usually is with concrete. They wanted to do as good a job as possible so they smoothed out the concrete to make everything look good and professional.
For extra support, they put the rebar in the base area. They we’re making great progress with the project, but of course, they still had more work to do.
The time had come for the men to take off the forms from the top of the entrance. They could see how much progress they made. Although they needed to wait a very long time for the concrete to dry.
The men were astounded by their progress. Before they had started working, it was an abandoned bomb shelter. Now look at it!
After they finished with the concrete, they were ready to go explore down under. The men did an amazing job all by themselves. They made the entrance look brand new.
They still had to work on the inside. Their first step was to make away with the rusty steps. They needed to use a propane torch and grinder in order to loosen the screws.
These old steps are what remained. They thought that these steps definitely cannot be trusted, that’s for sure. It’s a good thing they removed them.
They removed also the railing of the steps, as that was also rusted. You can see in this picture how tight the space was. Once they finished with that, they were ready to start working on the inside. They removed the hinges left over from a door which had been there.
Finally, they were able to see inside. It wasn’t very special but with some work they could turn it into something…
They soon realized that they had more work than they intended as the fiberglass on the ceiling was starting to come off. Fiberglass can be dangerous if it touches your skin and it can affect your lungs.
They then realized that the fiberglass wasn’t actually connected to the ceiling and that they could simply peel it off. Removing it took time, as the ceiling was at an uncomfortable angle.
They kept removing the fiberglass until it was just concrete. Then they put the fiberglass into a big pile. It had probably been wearing away for decades.
They sure had a lot of cleaning to do! And while they weren’t finished with the shelter, they could see that it had a lot of potential.
With all the hard work they put in, they decided to stop there for now and carry on at another point for round 2.
They still had to clean up and remove the garbage from the shelter. Hard work never ends for the hard worker. it was totally worth it! such an amazing find in a plain looking back yard
