After graduating from Martin High in 2010, Hoying went on to the University of South California where he joined an acapella group known SoCal VoCals. He found out about The Sing-Off from a member of the group, Ben Bram. Hoying talked Maldonado and Grassi into joining but Bram wanted them to get a beat boxer and that how Avi Kaplan came into the fray through a friend. Kaplan was already highly recognized in the acapella community due to his rare texture and vocal prowess as a bass singer. Hoying, Maldonado, and Grassi later discovered Kevin Olusola on Youtube.
