Lupin (BEST)
Seasons: 1 season, 10 episodes. Starring: Omar Sy, Ludivine Sagnier, Clotilde Hesme, Vincent Londez, Soufiane Guerrab, and, Shirine Boutella. Lupin is a French mystery thriller. Omar Sy's character is based on one created over 100 years ago, in 1900, Arsène Lupin. It tells the tale of a professional thief who manages to make his way in the world with determination, hypocrisy, and illegal ways.
Why is this a keeper: Lupin is one of the few non-English speaking TV series that really made it big. It manages to take a story that was written over one hundred years ago and pumps life back into it as if it was written only yesterday.
I Am Not Okay With This (BEST)
Seasons: 1 season, 7 episodes. Starring: Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Sofia Bryant, and, Kathleen Rose Perkins. Although I Am Not Okay With This features the story of teenagers, it is not a teen show in any way. It covers the story of an adolescent dealing with, sexuality, life obstacles, and superpowers.
Why is this a keeper: I Am Not Okay With This is controversial. It was nominated for Best Adaptation from Comic Book Novel, but on the other hand, it was too authentic at times and some found it disturbing.
Unorthodox (BEST)
Seasons: 1 season, 4 episodes. Starring: Shira Haas, Amit Rahav, and, Jeff Wilbusch. Unorthodox is inspired by the autobiography of Deborah Feldman, a Hassidic Jew who turned her back on her roots and opened a new chapter in life away from the closed and restricted world she was once part of.
Why is this a keeper: This is a must-watch. The series reflects a world that is unknown and misunderstood to most of us, which leaves the viewers overwhelmed and amazed. The other thing that will keep you amazed is Shira Haas. Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress, Haas will for sure be a big name one day.
Russian Doll (BEST)
Seasons: 2 seasons, 15 episodes. Starring: Natasha Lyonne, Greta Lee, Yul Vazquez, Elizabeth Ashley, Charlie Barnett, and, Chloë Sevigny. Although the name initially indicates a crime or horror series, Russian Doll is actually a light paranormal drama series. It tells the story of Nadia Vulvokov (Lyonne), who experiences living the same day only to mysteriously die and repeat it over and over again. She sets off on a mission to try and solve her dying mystery and eventually meets Alan Zaveri (Barnett) who is going through the same adventure.
Why is this a keeper: Russin Doll was titled one of the best series back in 2019. We are not sure why the series falls under the comic category, however, the storyline is unique, the acting is phenomenal, and it provides great escapism for those lonely nights.
