The Lucky Ones
Unlocking a car with an app may not be an entirely new idea, but Apple is working with BMW to make car owner’s lives easier. The digital key will be included in the updated iOS14 version of the iPhone. For now, the only vehicle this feature will open is the 2021 BMW 5-series, but you should expect more cars to be added as the technology develops.
Restricted Access
The iPhone’s digital key will be stored in Apple’s Wallet app. With full or restricted access options available, up to five people can share the key. Access will be assigned using iMessage. Interestingly enough, the restricted access feature will limit the speed a driver can travel, reduce the horsepower available, and even define the car’s radio volume. This is an ideal solution for parents with young drivers!

Low Battery Is Not an Issue
A common fear is that you may get stranded if and when your phone runs out of battery, but that won’t be the case. If your phone runs out of battery, the key function will work on a special reserve for up to five hours after your phone turns off. If your phone goes missing or is stolen, you can turn off the function using iCloud!
