The metal Slinkies were first sold in New York, and today, the plastic Slinkies are made in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and Plymouth, Michigan.
The Slinky is also named Spring and was the inspiration behind other huge hit toys like the Slinky Train and the Slinky Dog. To this day, the metal (or plastic) spring entertains thousands of children around the world during hours of boredom.
Made in the USA: Hershey’s Chocolate
There's Godiva, there's Cadburys, there's Nestle, and there is Mars, however, none of them is anything like our favorite American candy brand. The Hershey brand has become synonymous with quality Chocolate since 1900. And for well over 100 years, the delicious confection has mostly been made in America, justifying its reputation.
For decades, the American public has enjoyed Hershey’s chocolate bars, chocolate syrup, peanut butter cups, and, of course, chocolate kisses. The Hershey Company does have a handful of production plants in Brazil and Mexico but is still headquartered in Hershey, Pennsylvania. They also have production plants in multiple U.S. locations.
Made in the USA: Igloo Coolers
Coolers have become an essential item for any situation where a refrigerator is needed but not available. The famous Igloo cooler brand began creating coolers in 1947, and they are still made in Katy, Texas, today. According to the Igloo website, the coolers are made in a 1.8 million-square-foot, three-building facility.
Truly capturing the individualistic spirit of America, the brand has branched out from the simple cooler to now feature special sizes, prints, and designs so you can make your cooler all your own. To this day, people still have the Igloo Coolers they purchased more than 20 years ago, proving how good quality this product is.
Made in the USA: KitchenAid Mixers
KitchenAid is known for creating durable, multi-purpose kitchen tools, like their famous stand mixers that come in a rainbow of colors. KitchenAid has been made in Greenville, Ohio, since 1941. Along with the stand mixer, they also make other small appliances. Though the brand outsources a few of its parts from China, its primary manufacturing plants are in South Carolina, Ohio, Arkansas, Indiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
A mixer, in many ways, is the centerpiece of the kitchen. For many years it has been more than just a device that mixes cake ingredients, and the investment in design has been noticeable. Fun fact; did you know that a KitchenAid Mixer can shred chicken, grind meat and spiralize vegetables?
Made in the USA: Post-It Notes
The 3M company did not start making the simple yet life-changing Post-It Notes until 1977. The product was created by accident by 3M employees Art Fry and Dr. Spencer Silver. The two, who were trying to create an aircraft-building adhesive, realized they may have had a new product on their hands.
The handy notes that now demonstrate American creativity and ingenuity have been made in Cynthiana, Kentucky, since 1985. Never in a million years did they think that a small piece of paper, in all colors of the rainbow, would become such a great success and even be copied by other companies.
Made in the USA: Crayola Crayons
If there is one brand that is synonymous with childhood fun, it's Crayola Crayons. The bright-colored crayons first appeared to the public in 1903 and are still a childhood staple today. Parents may be happy to hear that Crayola Crayons are entirely made in the USA. In fact, the factory in Easton, Pennsylvania, makes over 3 billion crayons per year and around 650 crayons per minute.
The brand has over 200 hundred shades of color that have been produced in wide assortments, and it became a huge hit when it came u with an innovative and cheap way to combine safe color pigment with paraffin wax.
Made in the USA: Zippo Lighters
Zippo lighters were first manufactured in 1933 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and have even become collector’s items today. They first became popular during World War II, representing the steely grit of the US Military. The good news is that Zippo is still made in the USA.
Another interesting fact is that the company also provides jobs to inmates (who assemble the lighters) while they are serving their time. It is known as "the windproof" lighter, meaning the flame will keep on going even under the worst weather conditions. One fault through, it's almost impossible to simply blow out the flame. For every benefit, there is a price to pay.
Made in the USA: Pyrex Glassware
Pyrex glassware is known to be a versatile and aesthetic way to prepare, bake, and store food in the kitchen. The Pyrex brand features a variety of products, from measuring cups to mixing bowls, and has been a staple in American kitchens since its founding in 1915.
As it turns out, the actual glass Pyrex uses is unique, which differentiates this line of products from all others. The sturdy glassware is actually made in Corning, New York, and in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. So you can bake your next casserole with full confidence that your Pyrex glassware was made in the USA.
Made in the USA: Little Tikes Cozy Coupe
Though China produces some of the parts, Little Tikes Cozy Coupe (the toy car for toddlers) is manufactured in Hudson, Ohio. The founder of Little Tikes, Thomas Murdough Jr., originally started the company in Ohio in 1969, and it was one of the first plastic toy cars sold in the United States.
It was considered The Best Selling Car" for more than a decade, leaving Honda Accord behind. The fact that the company remains in the USA over 50 years later is truly remarkable, considering how many companies have factories overseas. The Little Tikes website even features a section devoted to their toys that are made in America.
Made Overseas: Radio Flyer
The cherry-red Radio Flyer Wagon has become a symbol of an idyllic childhood in America. Radio Flyer wagons were originally made in Chicago, but after the company changed their materials from the original metal to lighter, cheaper plastic, they began outsourcing and began to produce out of the country.
The Chicago factory could not create the plastic parts, so in 2004, the company turned to none other than China. Today, though some of Radio Flyer’s products are still made in the Midwestern U.S., around two-thirds are made in China. Amongst other products, Red Flyer also produces scooters, tricycles, and ride-on.
Made Overseas: Barbie Dolls
Barbie dolls are some of the most iconic toys not only in America but across the globe. The dolls were originally conceptualized by Ruth Handler to be a 3-D version of a paper doll. Today, the Barbie doll has come a long way from the simple fashion doll.
Now, Barbie dolls are doctors, scientists, athletes, and businesswomen who represent the “American dream” for many young girls. But these “American dream” dolls were never made in America. They were first manufactured in Japan in 1959. And today, being owned by outsourcing giant Mattel, Barbies are made in Chinese, Malaysian, and Indonesian factories.
Made Overseas: Melissa & Doug Toys
Melissa & Doug toys are a favorite of consumers for their classic, wooden designs and bright colors. But if you’re looking for American-made toys, Melissa & Doug will unfortunately disappoint. The toy company is headquartered in Connecticut, but they manufacture the toy parts in China. What’s more disturbing is that their toys were found to pose potential health risks.
In both 2008 and 2009, there was a recall of 26,000 of their toys due to the discovery of excessive levels of barium in the surface paint. So, when it comes to purchasing safe toys for your kids, it may be better to buy them closer to home!
Made Overseas: Harley-Davidson
Harley-Davidson is another brand that personifies the quintessential rugged, free-spirit American. The motorcycle brand was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1903 and was one of two automotive brands that managed to survive the Great Depression. Despite the success, Harley-Davidson motorcycles did not remain a fully American-made product.
Today, though they have plants in Wisconsin, Missouri, and Pennsylvania, the company shocked many of its loyal customers when, in 2018, it moved its production overseas. Today, many of their electric components are made in China. It used to be the biggest motorbike manufacturer in the world, operating in more than 60 countries.
Made Overseas: Fisher-Price Toys
Toy brand, Fisher-Price, has filled homes for years with its wide variety of toys for kids of many ages. Fisher-Price falls under the umbrella of the larger toy brand, Mattel, which outsources production from Chinese factories. Disturbingly, the brand has had to issue many recalls of their toys made by Chinese vendors in 2007 and in 2020 due to dangerously high levels of lead.
The company has since promised to regain its customers' confidence once again. They are globally known for the best lie of products, Little People toys, which delivers various play sets such as a house, school, garage, and more.
Made Overseas: Huffy Bikes
Huffy Bikes have been headquartered in Ohio since 1887. Huffy was revolutionary in their development of a convertible bike in 1949 with the first-ever training wheels for children. To this day, the brand is considered one of the best products designated for children, however, they have a long way to go when it comes to competing against the big boy bikes.
Many bike models and years later, Huffy sadly closed two of its U.S.-based factories, moving their production to China in 1999. Huffy also has factories in Mexico and Taiwan, with 70% of its materials coming from these off-shore locations.
Made Overseas: Hush Puppies Shoes
Hush Puppies shoes have been an American staple since 1957 due to their comfort and classic style. The Hush Puppies brand is owned by Wolverine Worldwide and has headquarters in Rockford, Michigan. The brand became famous for selling comfort. They never said they had better-looking shoes or attractive prices, they emphasized the comfort of their goods, which was incomparable.
Unfortunately, the beloved leather shoes are not manufactured in Michigan but are instead produced in a Chinese factory. Still, Hush Puppies shoes remain beloved by many Americans to this day. The brand operates in over 130 countries and shows no signs of stopping.
Sold Overseas: Spotify
Digital music listening platform, Spotify, allows users access to millions of songs and albums as well as customized channels to suit individual tastes. All within the comfort of their own smartphone. Such simple creation that anyone could have thought of, except no one did.
In 2013, Tech Crunch noted that the music platform announced a share swap with China-based company Tencent Music Entertainment. True, the product is not tangible, but in plain language, this means that Spotify is now partially owned by China. So, as it turns out, the only thing Americans left from Spotify are the artists listed on it.
Made Overseas: Oakley Sunglasses
Oakley sunglasses contain a “Made in the USA” label, but the brand has created some controversy about where their goods are actually manufactured. Initially, it was thought that the label indicated that they were made in the United States, however, there are other speculations.
Headquartered in Foothill Ranch, California, Oakley was bought by Luxottica in 2007, which moved some of its production to a Chinese factory. It was finally revealed that 70 percent of Oakley’s parts are made in the USA, which is a respectable percentage, but that still leaves a weighty 30 percent that is outsourced from other countries.
Made Overseas: Calvin Klein
Known for its clean silhouettes and casual glamour (not to mention its high-profile spokespeople), Calvin Klein was born in New York City in 1968. Although Calvin Klein ads have been plastered across the United States with the faces of celebrities like Justin Bieber and Kendall Jenner, the fashion label receives most of its materials from China.
Certain specialty materials, such as their leather, come from Italy, but most of their other materials are outsourced from China, as their clothing tags clearly state. So, the brand is America, however, it is produced anywhere, and thankfully the presenters are all stripes and stars.
Made Overseas: Gillette Razors
Made in Boston, Massachusetts, Gillette Razors ran a bold ad campaign featuring their “Made in Boston” heritage. Not only was this an American product, but it was important for the brand to emphasize the fact that it was Bostonian too. Today, some of Gillette’s parts are manufactured in the US, while some of their product parts come from China.
They even receive many of their batteries and handles from other overseas locations, including Mexico and Poland. So, not only is Gillette made all over the world, but it is also used all over the world. Consider it during your next shave.
Made Overseas: Craftsman States
Anyone who has done some handyman work knows this famous brand. The Craftsman brand has long-represented American ideals of quality and durability in the tools, lawn equipment, and work clothing they have produced. Department store giant, Sears, carried Craftsman products up until 2017. After that, the brand was bought by Stanley Black and Decker.
Since being bought by Black and Decker, many Craftsman products are now manufactured outside of the United States. All American Reviews reported that Apex Tool Group makes many of Craftsman’s hand tools and assembles them in China, but a select few are still made in America.
Sold Overseas: Uber
Uber has become the 21st-century definition of a cab (or a Taxi, if you wish). San Francisco-based Uber founders Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, first developed the concept for Uber after sharing the cost of a ride with a friend. Their company has changed the way we view the world of private transportation since its beginning in 2009.
Eventually, Uber was sold to its Chinese rival, Didi Chuxing, in 2016. Why sell to a rival? Well, CNBC reported that Uber had been losing $1 billion a year to Didi Chuxing and could no longer compete with the Chinese transport company.
Made Overseas: American Girl Dolls
With a company name like American Girl, you would think the brand would be made entirely in America. But in fact, the varied collection of American Girl dolls are manufactured in China. The company originally made the dolls from their base in Middleton, Wisconsin, before being bought by the big toy brand Mattel in 1998. Today, Mattel makes most American Girl products in Chinese factories, including their doll clothes.
So if you are looking for a real American girl doll, you will have to look elsewhere. We supposed the term American is all about the personality and characteristics of the doll and not necessarily where it's made. Ye, right.
Made Overseas: LL Bean
LL Bean, the brand known for its outdoor gear and apparel, has supplied Americans with what they need to venture into the wild since 1912. The company is located in Freeport, Maine, where they manufacture their signature boots, outdoor apparel, and household items. While they do make many of their products in the USA, they also have factories in China, India, Mexico, and other overseas locations.
All American Reviews states that LL Bean does, in fact, manufacture many of its products in the U.S. (about 425 out of 5000 products), but this makes their American-made products less than 10% of their production line.
Sold Overseas: Segway Inc
Segway, the futuristic-looking self-balancing electric scooter, was first released in 2002. Segway scooters soon became a popular way for tourists to explore new places and even for security guards to get around easier. Segway is still based in New Hampshire but unfortunately struggled in the American market. There are Segways all over the world, and it has become part of the international dictionary.
Because of the struggles, the company was passed through several owners until it was sold in 2015 to Ninebot, a Shanghai-based tech company that produces short-distance motorized transport devices. As of 2023, the company is worth a little over $75 million.
Made Overseas: Motorola
Some years ago, Motorola was the number one phone manufacturer, alongside Ericcson, and these were the days before Samsung and Apple became what they are. No iPhones or Galaxies in sight. It is challenging to find products that are truly made in America, and with cell phones, it’s nearly impossible.
The company was founded by brothers Paul and Joseph Galvin in 1928, who initially named it Galvin Manufacturing Corporation, and has obviously changed and grown since. In 2014, Lenovo, a Chinese smartphone producer, bought the company. While Motorola’s headquarters are at least still in Midwestern America (Chicago, Illinois), like so many other products, their manufacturing takes place in Chinese and even Indian factories.
Made Overseas: Tesla
Tesla, the pioneer in American electric vehicles, has been applauded for its brilliance in both green technology and design. The company is headquartered in the United States, but the CEO, Elon Musk, decided to create a production factory in Shanghai, China.
Tesla still maintains its production plant in Fremont, California, and although it has been touted as one of the “most American” cars, only about 50 percent of the parts are made in America. As of today, Tesla is worth more than $650 Billion, making it one of the biggest American names that are made outside of the United States.
Made Overseas: iPads and iPhones
You are sure to have at least one model of one of these two at home. Headquartered in Cupertino, California, Apple is certainly one of the most beloved brands in the United States and worldwide, and it is also one of the most associated brands with America. But the brand that started in the U.S. actually has China manufacture its iPhones and iPads.
While inexpensive labor may be a factor for Apple’s overseas production, they also have their products made there for a very unusual reason. Reportedly, the creation of iPads and iPhones requires rare earth elements (such as copper, gold, and silver), and China controls 97% of the earth’s supply of these elements.
Made Overseas: Ray-Bans
Ray-Ban sunglasses were founded by Bausch & Lomb in 1937. The sunglasses have become another iconic American brand and became especially popular after they were worn by Tom Cruise in the film "Risky Business". But despite gracing American faces for so many years, Ray-Bans are not even made in America.
Bausch & Lomb sold the company to Luxoticca in 1999, which moved the production of Ray-Bans to an Italian factory. Gradually, more factories were opened outside of Italy, including locations in China. Today, the best way to make sure you have American-made sunglasses is to buy vintage Bausch & Lomb frames.
Made Overseas: Nike
Nike is certainly one of the most popular and iconic brands for both athletes and non-athletes alike, and in recent years it has even become more popular, with sports clothes becoming another word for casual. While the products have represented American style and athleticism for decades, China is making most of them.
Most of Nike’s shoes are made in overseas factories located in China and Vietnam. But when outsourcing labor overseas, it can be difficult for an American company to ensure ethical workplace standards outside of the United States. Most recently, it was reported that Nike products were being made under forced labor at one of their Chinese manufacturing plants.
Made Overseas: Dirt Devil
The Dirt Devil hand vacuum was created in 1984 by Royal Appliance Manufacturing. For decades, Americans have relied on this powerful vacuum to keep their homes clean. Now they have likely moved on to Roombas and iRobots. Dirt Devil is based in Charlotte, North Carolina but was bought by the Chinese manufacturer TTI in 2013.
China reportedly makes most of TTI’s products, including Hoover and Dirt Devil vacuum cleaners. So, though the headquarters might be in the U.S., today, the vacuums are most certainly made in China. They have several competitors in the industry, however, they are all made in the same place.
Made Overseas: New Balance
Though New Balance, the well-known athletic shoe brand, claims to be an American company, the shoes are actually made overseas. You've been walking the streets so proud of your American gear when, in fact, it's not all that at all despite the headquarters being in Oregon. Though they claim to have an American design, even new models aren't 100% made of American-sourced materials.
In fact, New Balance materials are mostly sourced from overseas, including their outer soles, which are manufactured in China. The shoes are labeled “made in the USA,” but there are many qualities of New Balance shoes that are not all-American.
Sold Overseas: Forbes
Forbes Media has had a tremendous influence on its American viewers through its digital media, print, and television outlets. The media giant reportedly reaches 75 million people each month. Forbes was sold to a Hong Kong investment group (Integrated Whale Media) in 2014, though their headquarters are still located in New York, and Steve Forbes remains the editor-in-chief.
In explaining the international sale, Forbes announced on their blog that they were shifting from print to digital content (which is not surprising), most likely in an effort to gain an even larger audience. To this day, Forbes remains a reliable source of information concerning the richest people on this planet.
Made Overseas: Converse
The loved Converse tennis shoes began in 1908 and became a fashion icon among pro-skaters and other street style lovers. Though Converse is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, they don’t manufacture their shoes in the USA. The company was sold to Nike in 2003, and production was moved overseas that same year.
Today, these colorful sneakers are made in Chinese and Indonesian factories. Though their branding has been to sell footwear that is “all-American,” they are not truly American-produced shoes. Don’t be surprised if you see just as many people wearing Converse shoes in China and Indonesia as you do in America.
Made in the USA: Maglite Flashlights
Whether you’re taking out the trash in the middle of the night or just suffered a power outage, chances are you’ll be using a Maglite flashlight. Founded by Anthony Maglica in 1955, Maglite Flashlights are one of the leading brands of flashlights in the U.S.A., and they are they’re 100 percent American-made.
Based in Ontario, California, Maglite’s manufacturing headquarters, office, and distribution center remain in the U.S. to this day. The company has specified that some of the components used in its wide array of products have been made outside the U.S., but anything concerning the manufacturing of the actual flashlights has always been done in-house.
Made in the USA: Red Wing Shoes
Back in 1905, Charles Beckman wanted to create a line of footwear that would address the needs of workers in the farming, mining, and logging industries, so he founded Red Wing Shoes. Based in Red Wing, Minnesota, this all-American company has been sourcing raw materials and manufacturing footwear for well over a hundred years, and it has all been done in the United States.
Red Wing Shoes are comfortable and durable and carry a well-established reputation of being one of the best brands of footwear in the world. All of their boots and footwear are made with leather from their tannery in Minnesota, and they intend to keep it that way.
Made in the USA: Stihl Outdoor Products
Anybody who has ever worked outdoors will recognize the Stihl brand. Together with Husqvarna and Makita, Stihl is one of the world’s biggest names in tools. Founded over 6 decades ago, Stihl Incorporated has become a giant in the gasoline-powered tools market, and even though many of its products are made globally, its outdoor line is still one hundred percent American-made.
Stihl’s gas-powered outdoor tools are manufactured in the company’s Virginia headquarters, and the company is committed to keeping it that way. From this in-house factory, Stihl ships products to over 90 countries across the globe with the proud label of “made in the U.S.A.”
Made in the USA: Dum Dum Lollipops
Dum-Dum Lollipops are one of America’s favorite candy favors; the trademark ball-shaped candy on a stick has been a staple of every American’s childhood for nearly 100 years. Dum-Dums were founded in 1924 by the Akron Candy Company in Ohio. They chose the name due to the fun and simple nature of it, making it easy for children to pronounce.
Since 1924, all raw ingredients for the lollipops have been sourced in the U.S., and their manufacturing headquarters remain in Ohio to this day. You can find this all-American lollipop in any Walmart, Target, Sam’s Club, or virtually any major grocery and drug store across the country.
Made in the USA: Yankee Candle Products
It’s rare to find an American home that doesn’t own at least one Yankee Candle, and there’s a reason for that – they are simply one of the best brands of scented candles in the country. Born in 1969, Yankee Candle came to be after a 16-year-old boy called Mike Kittredge decided to melt some crayons to make his mom a candle as a Christmas gift.
One of Mike’s neighbors happened to see the candle and liked it so much that she asked to buy it; with that money, Mike bought wax for two candles, one to give to his mother and the other to sell. That was the first Yankee Candle ever sold. Nowadays, Yankee Candle is a company with over 400 retail stores and a booming online business. Every single scented candle is made in their factory in Massachusetts.
Made in the USA: American Plastic Toys
You can’t have a company with the name “American Plastic Toys” and not be completely manufactured in the U.S.A. And this brand has certainly stayed true to that claim since it has been making its products in the United States for over 60 years. Founded in 1962, American Plastic Toys has four factories in the states of Mississippi and Michigan and employs over 300 U.S. workers.
Nowadays, American Plastic Toys manufactures a wide range of toys, including toy cars, wagons, sand pails, kitchen play sets, toy strollers, building blocks, dollhouses, and hundreds more. It remains one of the few toy companies to be completely sourced and manufactured in the United States. Even the plastics and colorants for the toys are purchased locally.
Made in the USA: Oreck XL Vacuums
The Oreck Corporation revolutionized the cleaning industry in America when it was created back in 1963. Founded by David Oreck, this company became the first to manufacture upright vacuums that were primarily used by the hotel industry in the United States. Slowly, Oreck vacuum cleaners became a staple of every American household, and its products now include floor polishing machines, air purifiers, steam mops, and an array of cleaning products.
Even though the Oreck company does make some of its products abroad, its line of Oreck Xtended Life Vacuums has always been and will be manufactured in its flagship factory in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Made in the USA: K’Nex Toys
Especially when it comes to toy companies, they often have most of their products made in Asia. However, this American company can proudly say they’ve always been made in the U.S.A.; K’Nex Toys was founded by Joel Glickman in 1992 in Pennsylvania. They are mostly construction toy systems, similar to Lego, with which kids can build any structure they want.
With over 30 years in the market, K’Nex Toys is one of the very few toy brands that exclusively manufacture in the United States. All the source materials come from the U.S., and they are strongly committed to keeping it that way.
Made in the USA: Hanky Panky Lingerie
Hanky Panky is a lingerie brand that makes beautiful, high-quality lingerie. Every pattern is designer-made and extremely durable and made 100 percent in the U.S.A. It all started with Parsons School student Gale Epstein back in 1977. Gale wanted to design something special for a friend and had the idea of using handkerchief fabric to create a one-of-a-kind lingerie set.
Her friend loved the gift so much that she suggested they start a brand, and shortly after, Hanky Panky Lingerie was established. The thing about Hanky Panky that makes it such a special brand of lingerie is the use of extra stitches and threads that makes for comfortable and durable wear.
Made in the USA: Wiffle Balls
A lighter version of baseball, Wiffle ball has been a popular American sport for decades and the preferred game of choice for anyone with kids and a backyard. The origins of the Wiffle ball go back to 1953 when a former pro baseball player came up with an idea for his son to practice the sport while avoiding any injuries.
So, he came up with the Wiffle ball – a variation of baseball with a much lighter ball designed to play in confined spaces, making it perfect for a small backyard. Created in Shelton, Connecticut, the Wiffle ball has stayed the same for over six decades, with every single material sourced in the U.S. To this day, its manufacturing headquarters are still in Connecticut.
Made in the USA: KettlePizza Ovens
You won’t find anything more American than pizza oven inserts for a charcoal grill. With the straightforward slogan “Pizzafy your oven!” KettlePizza Ovens manufactures insertable pizza ovens that fit in any common charcoal grill. The idea came to its creator, Al Contarino, when, as a grill enthusiast, he became fed up with the fact that in order to check his food, he had to open the grill lid and let some heat escape, therefore compromising the food.
After many designs and tries, Al Contarino and his friend and fellow inventor George Peters came up with the first prototype for the KettlePizza Oven in early 2010. The insertable ovens allow the grillmaster to check on his food without having to open the lid – and make insanely delicious pizzas! And it’s all made in Contrarino’s Massachusetts barn.

Before MAC and Bobbie Brown, there was Merle Norman Makeup – a true American company founded in 1931. One day in 1930, Merle Norman decided to experiment with different ingredients in her kitchen so she could make the perfect face cream; a mere year later, this amazing entrepreneur opened her makeup company.
