Those of you who have read our two previous installments featuring the production country of different household items are now better aware of that. In this third installment, we went for another research to bring you some more information about what is or isn’t being made in the United States.
Made in the USA: Maglite Flashlights
Whether you’re taking out the trash in the middle of the night or just suffered a power outage, chances are you’ll be using a Maglite flashlight. Founded by Anthony Maglica in 1955, Maglite Flashlights are one of the leading brands of flashlights in the U.S.A., and they are they’re 100 percent American-made.
Based in Ontario, California, Maglite’s manufacturing headquarters, office, and distribution center remain in the U.S. to this day. The company has specified that some of the components used in its wide array of products have been made outside the U.S., but anything concerning the manufacturing of the actual flashlights has always been done in-house.
Made in the USA: Red Wing Shoes
Back in 1905, Charles Beckman wanted to create a line of footwear that would address the needs of workers in the farming, mining, and logging industries, so he founded Red Wing Shoes. Based in Red Wing, Minnesota, this all-American company has been sourcing raw materials and manufacturing footwear for well over a hundred years, and it has all been done in the United States.
Red Wing Shoes are comfortable and durable and carry a well-established reputation of being one of the best brands of footwear in the world. All of their boots and footwear are made with leather from their tannery in Minnesota, and they intend to keep it that way.
Made in the USA: Stihl Outdoor Products
Anybody who has ever worked outdoors will recognize the Stihl brand. Together with Husqvarna and Makita, Stihl is one of the world’s biggest names in tools. Founded over 6 decades ago, Stihl Incorporated has become a giant in the gasoline-powered tools market, and even though many of its products are made globally, its outdoor line is still one hundred percent American-made.
Stihl’s gas-powered outdoor tools are manufactured in the company’s Virginia headquarters, and the company is committed to keeping it that way. From this in-house factory, Stihl ships products to over 90 countries across the globe with the proud label of “made in the U.S.A.”
Made in the USA: Dum Dum Lollipops
Dum-Dum Lollipops are one of America’s favorite candy favors; the trademark ball-shaped candy on a stick has been a staple of every American’s childhood for nearly 100 years. Dum-Dums were founded in 1924 by the Akron Candy Company in Ohio. They chose the name due to the fun and simple nature of it, making it easy for children to pronounce.
Since 1924, all raw ingredients for the lollipops have been sourced in the U.S., and their manufacturing headquarters remain in Ohio to this day. You can find this all-American lollipop in any Walmart, Target, Sam’s Club, or virtually any major grocery and drug store across the country.
Made in the USA: Yankee Candle Products
It’s rare to find an American home that doesn’t own at least one Yankee Candle, and there’s a reason for that – they are simply one of the best brands of scented candles in the country. Born in 1969, Yankee Candle came to be after a 16-year-old boy called Mike Kittredge decided to melt some crayons to make his mom a candle as a Christmas gift.
One of Mike’s neighbors happened to see the candle and liked it so much that she asked to buy it; with that money, Mike bought wax for two candles, one to give to his mother and the other to sell. That was the first Yankee Candle ever sold. Nowadays, Yankee Candle is a company with over 400 retail stores and a booming online business. Every single scented candle is made in their factory in Massachusetts.
Made in the USA: American Plastic Toys
You can’t have a company with the name “American Plastic Toys” and not be completely manufactured in the U.S.A. And this brand has certainly stayed true to that claim since it has been making its products in the United States for over 60 years. Founded in 1962, American Plastic Toys has four factories in the states of Mississippi and Michigan and employs over 300 U.S. workers.
Nowadays, American Plastic Toys manufactures a wide range of toys, including toy cars, wagons, sand pails, kitchen play sets, toy strollers, building blocks, dollhouses, and hundreds more. It remains one of the few toy companies to be completely sourced and manufactured in the United States. Even the plastics and colorants for the toys are purchased locally.
Made in the USA: Oreck XL Vacuums
The Oreck Corporation revolutionized the cleaning industry in America when it was created back in 1963. Founded by David Oreck, this company became the first to manufacture upright vacuums that were primarily used by the hotel industry in the United States. Slowly, Oreck vacuum cleaners became a staple of every American household, and its products now include floor polishing machines, air purifiers, steam mops, and an array of cleaning products.
Even though the Oreck company does make some of its products abroad, its line of Oreck Xtended Life Vacuums has always been and will be manufactured in its flagship factory in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Made in the USA: K’Nex Toys
Especially when it comes to toy companies, they often have most of their products made in Asia. However, this American company can proudly say they’ve always been made in the U.S.A.; K’Nex Toys was founded by Joel Glickman in 1992 in Pennsylvania. They are mostly construction toy systems, similar to Lego, with which kids can build any structure they want.
With over 30 years in the market, K’Nex Toys is one of the very few toy brands that exclusively manufacture in the United States. All the source materials come from the U.S., and they are strongly committed to keeping it that way.
Made in the USA: Hanky Panky Lingerie
Hanky Panky is a lingerie brand that makes beautiful, high-quality lingerie. Every pattern is designer-made and extremely durable and made 100 percent in the U.S.A. It all started with Parsons School student Gale Epstein back in 1977. Gale wanted to design something special for a friend and had the idea of using handkerchief fabric to create a one-of-a-kind lingerie set.
Her friend loved the gift so much that she suggested they start a brand, and shortly after, Hanky Panky Lingerie was established. The thing about Hanky Panky that makes it such a special brand of lingerie is the use of extra stitches and threads that makes for comfortable and durable wear.
Made in the USA: Wiffle Balls
A lighter version of baseball, Wiffle ball has been a popular American sport for decades and the preferred game of choice for anyone with kids and a backyard. The origins of the Wiffle ball go back to 1953 when a former pro baseball player came up with an idea for his son to practice the sport while avoiding any injuries.
So, he came up with the Wiffle ball – a variation of baseball with a much lighter ball designed to play in confined spaces, making it perfect for a small backyard. Created in Shelton, Connecticut, the Wiffle ball has stayed the same for over six decades, with every single material sourced in the U.S. To this day, its manufacturing headquarters are still in Connecticut.
Made in the USA: KettlePizza Ovens
You won’t find anything more American than pizza oven inserts for a charcoal grill. With the straightforward slogan “Pizzafy your oven!” KettlePizza Ovens manufactures insertable pizza ovens that fit in any common charcoal grill. The idea came to its creator, Al Contarino, when, as a grill enthusiast, he became fed up with the fact that in order to check his food, he had to open the grill lid and let some heat escape, therefore compromising the food.
After many designs and tries, Al Contarino and his friend and fellow inventor George Peters came up with the first prototype for the KettlePizza Oven in early 2010. The insertable ovens allow the grillmaster to check on his food without having to open the lid – and make insanely delicious pizzas! And it’s all made in Contrarino’s Massachusetts barn.
Made in the USA: Merle Norman Makeup
Before MAC and Bobbie Brown, there was Merle Norman Makeup – a true American company founded in 1931. One day in 1930, Merle Norman decided to experiment with different ingredients in her kitchen so she could make the perfect face cream; a mere year later, this amazing entrepreneur opened her makeup company.
True to her roots, Merle Norman founded her brand in Santa Monica, California, and that’s exactly where she’s stayed and manufactured her makeup for over 90 years. Even though the brand now has studios in Los Angeles and several other cities across the USA, the business remains owned by the Norman family. And its sales are better than ever.
Made in the USA: Anchor Hocking Glassware
This American company has been around for over 100 years — Anchor Hocking Glassware. The company, founded in 1905 in Lancaster, Ohio, was named after the Hocking River. It has kept its factories in Ohio and Pennsylvania and employs over 2000 people across the country.
Proud to manufacture all its glassware in the U.S., they proudly label every single product with the label “Made in the USA.” You’ll find anywhere from beautiful bakeware, drinkware, measuring instruments, and food storage containers to pantry containers and houseware. All are made with the finest glass and a classy design. It seems that Anchor Hocking’s founder, Isaac J. Collins, knew exactly what he was doing a hundred years ago.
Made in the USA: Regal Ware
Regal Ware is one of those companies that’s as classic American as it gets. Founded in 1911 in Wisconsin, this cookware line has been in business for over 100 years, during which time it has always sourced and manufactured its products exclusively in the USA.
Chances are you or one of your friends have at least one French press or pot set from Regal Ware. This brand is one of the country’s biggest names in high-quality cookware, often made from cast iron and stainless steel. Regal Ware owns four different brands, each offering a variety of cooking and kitchen products – Lifetime, Saladmaster, American Kitchen, and Espro. You can find anything from $20 to $350, depending on your needs.
Made in the USA: Fleabags
No, it’s not a line of flea-infested bags. However, they are a business of American-made canvas bags that came to fruition after their owners’ numerous trips to flea markets around the world. In 2009, Shira Entis and Alexandra Bell realized they couldn’t find a sturdy enough bag to withstand their frequent shopping trips to flea markets. So, they decided to design their own, and so Fleabags came to be.
Nowadays, Fleabags offers beautiful canvas totes, bags, and clutches at a range of prices and designs. They pride themselves on always keeping their sourcing and manufacturing in-house. In fact, they recently launched a second brand called “Immodest Cotton,” which is expanding their line of unique products.
Made in the USA: O’Keeffe’s Installations
When we read the word O’Keeffe’s, we immediately think of the famous American skincare line, but there’s another American company with the same name that has made a point of keeping its manufacturing local. O’Keeffe’s skylight installations is a company headquartered in Brisbane, California, and specializes in designing, creating, and installing custom skylights for big architectural projects.
For example, if you visit the MOMA in New York, The Gateway Center in Los Angeles, the Houston Galleria Mall in Houston, or the Rincon Center in San Francisco, you can get a look at their innovative work. Apart from skylights, O’Keeffe’s produces square-rung ladders, fire-rated glass, and other aluminum construction products – and every single one is made in the United States.
Made in the USA: Vermont Castings
It makes sense that people from the gorgeous mountain state of Vermont would know how to keep their homes warm, considering the harsh months-long winters there. So it was that in 1979, in the quiet towns of Randolph and Bethel, Vermont, Castings was founded. The company is one of the world’s leading manufacturers, developers, and distributors of cast-iron wood stoves. And they’ve always been made in the USA.
Vermont Castings offers handmade, beautifully designed wood stoves, gas stoves, and wood-burning inserts to keep a home warm during the winter. Not only do they heat up a household better than any other product, but they’re also classy furniture pieces.
Made in the USA: Polarmax
If you’re looking to go camping or do any outdoor activities in extreme heat or below-zero temperatures, Polarmax should be your first stop. This clothing company was founded in the USA in 1985, and it has kept its production and material sourcing locally for over two decades.
Polarmax sells thermal and base-layer clothes for any weather forecast – breathable long-sleeves to protect from the sun, moisture-proof designs, thermal wear, and more. Not only is this a true American company through and through, but it also strives to keep its manufacturing and shipping as local as possible, never exceeding a 30-mile radius of its North Carolina-based headquarters.
Made in the USA: Nordic Ware
Even though the name might suggest a Scandinavian origin, Nordic Ware products are an American company through and through. Born in 1946 in Minneapolis, Nordic Ware manufactures every one of its products in their factory, also based in Minneapolis. The brand offers classic kitchen wares that have become household staples in the U.S.A. For example, the famous bundt cake aluminum mold that every traditional American house will surely have in its kitchen cupboard was patented by Nordic Ware.
The U.S.A.-based company also offers measuring cups, roller pins, baking sheets, cast aluminum pans, and anything else you might need for cooking and baking. They’ve recently released a new line of grillware and kitchen appliances that have their loyal, decades-long customer base rushing to their stores.
Made in the USA: Green Guru Gear
Started by outdoor enthusiasts in 2005, this Colorado-based company makes all of its products in-house. Guru Gear was created to offer outdoor and camping lovers an eco-friendly alternative to the mass market of outdoor gear products that can be extremely detrimental to the environment.
Every single product at Guru Gear is sourced in the U.S.A. from recycled materials. You’ll find everything from backpacks, wallets, and biking accessories to camping tents and skis, and you can feel better knowing they’re not made from polluting plastics, undegradable materials, or toxic fume processing that will hurt the environment. Now that’s a true nature lover.
Made in the USA: Gibson Guitars
Gibson guitars have embodied the rock n' roll soul for over 100 years. And for those 100 years, the guitars have been made in the USA. Highly recognizable electric models, like the Les Paul and SG, are produced in the custom Gibson shop in Nashville, Tennessee. Their semi-acoustic models (like the Gibson ES series) are also made in America.
Truly an all-American instrument, Gibson guitars have been played by famous musicians like Sheryl Crow, Joe Perry, and members of Aerosmith. Gibson Guitars is known for its warm sounds, which are unique to the brand. They truly are a part of the American soundtrack.
Made in the USA: All-American Clothing
As its name clearly states, All American Clothing is, well, all-American. Founded in 1992, the USA-based brand creates closet staples like t-shirts, jeans, and activewear. Founder Lawson Nickol was passionate about creating a brand that was durable and high quality. It also provided jobs to the local community and practiced ethical manufacturing within the United States.
Nickol also wanted to make sure that All American Clothing was a positive work environment for employees and that customers’ opinions were valued. These are essential values for any brand. The best seller of the brand is, without a doubt, their Blue Jeans, which initially got the company going.
Made in the USA: Round House Jeans
Round House Jeans has technically been around since the year of 1903 when it began as Round House Workwear. Named after the railroad repair station, the brand has transformed over the years but has a rich history, including creating khakis for U.S. soldiers during World War II.
Today, Round House Jeans still make workwear and jeans along with hats and kids' clothing. Manufactured in Oklahoma, they still claim to be the largest manufacturer of American-made work overalls and jeans. The affordability and the ruggedness of the jeans are what made them so successful and demanded by rail workers and construction guys.
Made in the USA: Stetson Hats
Another long-standing brand, Stetson, was founded in 1865 by John B. Stetson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. What began as a wardrobe staple to shade travelers’ eyes from the sun has become an American icon, invoking images of the rugged, Western United States. Today, Stetson has branched out from cowboy-style hats to include fedoras and knit caps, as well as their own clothing line.
Such American pieces like their Western hats can only have an American producer, so we can understand why these goods are still made near home. Today, Stetson (the man, not the brand) is known as the fellow who invented the cowboy hat, and without him, cowboying would have looked completely different.
Made in the USA: Darn Tough
Based in Northfield, Vermont, Darn Tough creates high-quality socks that are made to last. The thick socks are available in colorful patterns and are made for those who love to exist in nature, go hiking and camping, and do more outdoor exploring.
The company is committed to overseeing the entire creation process, including designing, testing, and manufacturing their socks, rather than having these steps take place outside of the United States. The uniqueness of these socks is their knitting technique which reduces bulkiness but increases comfort and fit. Without a doubt, these are one of the best socks on the market.
Made in the USA: Hickey Freeman
Nothing complements a man more than a well-tailored suit and it doesn't get any more well-tailored than Hickey Freeman. Born and based in Rochester, New York, Hickey Freeman began making fine, tailored suits in 1899. Along with its high-quality style, the Hickey Freeman brand strives to produce suits that are especially comfortable and that flex with the body.
Especially in the 21st century, when comfort comes before anything, the goods must preserve their initial quality so the production remains inland. All of the processes that go into creating each suit take place in their Rochester factory, from sleeves to collars.
Made in the USA: Randolph Engineering
Aviator-style sunglasses have become synonymous with classic American cool since General Douglas MacArthur sported the first pair during World War II. Now everybody wants to look like a pilot, even if what they do for a living mostly involves sitting at a desk and typing.
Though their signature style is the aviator design, Randolph also creates other frame styles, including pieces crafted in 22k and 23k gold! Today there are a few brands to choose from, but Randolph Engineering designs and handcrafts each pair of their sunglasses in Massachusetts, which makes this brand stand out and distinguish itself from others.
Made in the USA: The Things We Keep
A rather modern, all-American brand, The Things We Keep, started in 2011 in Brooklyn, New York. The brand prides itself on creating one-of-a-kind items that are made by hand. The Things We Keep encompasses both minimalistic, geometric jewelry (rings, necklaces, etc.) as well as a handful of houseware items.
The items are meant to be made with individual attention to create maximum durability that will last for years — hence the brand's name. Being handmade, the company could never move its production site outside of the United States, turning this into one of the few jewelry brands that are still 1001% all-American.
Made in the USA: Allen Edmonds
Allen Edmonds began creating handcrafted shoes in 1922 in Belgium, Wisconsin. (Yes, there is a Belgium in Wisconsin too, not just in Europe.) The brand stood out almost immediately for creating shoes that were remarkably comfortable, stylish, and durable. Allen Edmonds features many classic and contemporary styles that suit both simple and ornate tastes.
The goods are considered expensive. They are not a pair of shoes that you ware out very fast, and for quality, one must pay. When a product, be it a shoe, clothing, or device, is made in the United States, it automatically becomes more expensive than anything made outside.
Made in the USA: Winter Session
Winter Session designs and creates leather and canvas goods from their warehouse in Denver, Colorado. What makes their brand unique is the clever product designs they have made from these materials. The husband and wife co-founders wanted to make sure that their products (such as bags, wallets, planters, and more) were unisex and could easily complement their consumer’s lifestyles no matter who they are.
This way, they offered goods that were suited for most and, how not surprisingly, increased their business and turned it into a huge success story. The brand has a unique and distinguished design which makes it stand out.
Made in the USA: All-Clad Cookware
Anyone who is used to making their own food knows a thing or two about this brand and its products. All-Clad cookware is known for its four-stage creation process that yields some of the most efficient and durable kitchen essentials. All-Clad was founded in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania in 1971 by John Ulam.
Ulam was exceptionally savvy about metals and knew how their manufacturing process could create better kitchen products. For nearly 50 years, All-Clad has been making professional-quality pots and pans. Today, they have also added bakeware and electric appliances to their product line, including waffle makers, toasters, and slow cookers.
Made in the USA: Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste
Tom’s of Maine isn’t fooling around when it comes to being part “of Maine.” The very successful natural toothpaste company, as well as its stick deodorant, is made in Sanford, Maine. Over the years, main toothpaste has proven to be efficient and is considered one of the best brands of natural toothpaste the market has to offer.
Tom's of Maine antiplaque and whitening toothpaste is a good option if you prefer to avoid fluoride. With all-natural ingredients, they are a safe bet for kids who are learning to brush or need a little more convincing as they also come in a variety of flavors.
Made in the USA: Weber Grills
The Weber grill's iconic rounded shape hasn't changed much since it was first designed in 1952, but that has also kept it recognizable and a regular feature at many outdoor barbeques and cookouts. In the 21st century, the word Weber has become a synonym for the word grill, and it is associated with quality and reliability and sits comfortably on the top of the range shelf.
All the famous Weber grills (except their gas models, which are made overseas) are manufactured at the company's headquarters in Palatine, Illinois, so it's only good is also all American. A great purchase for the 4th of July.
Made in the USA: Wilson Footballs
Did you know that each pigskin thrown in the NFL is made in America? Well, you do now, as Wilson is the National Football League's official supplier. The company's facility is situated in Ada, Ohio, and that's where 4,000 leather footballs are made every day! And to think, each football comes with a pump and a Tee...
It was important for Wilson to maintain the production in the United States. NFL is all American, and American is all NFL. No other nation in the world sees football as Americans do, so producing the balls on a different land is out of the question.
Made in the USA: Chesapeake Bay Candles
Chesapeake Bay Candle factory makes more than a half-million scented candles every month, which are then sold at popular retail stores such as Target, as well as on Amazon. But they are no longer made in Maryland, as recently 125 workers were laid off there so Newell Brands, the company's owner since 2017, could move production to Whatley, Massachusetts — at least they are still made in America.
Candles can be found almost anywhere; however, not all candles you find are particularly good. Chesapeake Bay could easily move its production plant to a much cheaper location, however, it could have put the quality of the candles at risk.
Made in the USA: Green Toys
Green Toys has made its toys using more than 80 million recycled milk jugs. Their toys are fashioned to meet very strict standards for safety as well as sustainability, and that includes their packaging. The company relies on a local, all-American supply chain which also reduces energy usage, all this makes Green Toys a top seller when it comes to eco-friendly children's toys, offering sorting sets and miniature toy vehicles that will only set you back around $30.
Green Toys not only look after the planet, but they create beautiful toys while keeping their manufacturing plant inland. This is for sure as good as it gets.
Made in the USA: Aquasana Water Filters
Aquasana manufactures water filters to reduce contaminants found in tap water while keeping beneficial minerals, such as magnesium and calcium, to keep you hydrated as well as healthy. Sun Water Systems is the company behind Aquasana, and they are located in Texas, meaning all their prime filtration systems, including its adjustable showerhead filter and its Clean Water Machine for drinking, are assembled in America.
Every country in the world has its own water systems and its own quality of water, and they are not all the same. Aquasana Water Filters insist on developing and manufacturing its products near home so it can test local water and, therefore, deliver the best product possible.
Made in the USA: Lasko Fans
Lasko has been creating small home appliances and products in the U.S. for more than 100 years, and now that's something worth celebrating. Although some of its products are now produced overseas — with Lasko motors coming from China — the company continues to make many American-made products at its factories in Tennessee, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
A small domestic fan will forever be part of American households, especially in hot states where the summers can get quite intense for some, so Lasko prefers to spend a few more pennies on production to maintain the reputation of having a great product.
Made in the USA: Fiesta Tableware
Fiesta began when two brothers from East Liverpool, Ohio, (yes, England is not the only country with a Liverpool) formed a partnership to sell pottery wares back in 1871. Fiesta's ceramic tableware is made in several colorful art-deco styles. Since 1936, Fiesta has been manufactured in Newell, West Virginia.
In 2002, The New York Times called Fiesta "the most collected brand of china in the United States." Fiesta took its first footsteps in the industry in the late 19th century, when quality meant a product for life, unlike these days, when goods last barely five years, and we are forced to renew constantly.
Made in the USA: Socks4Life
Socks4Life isn't a manufacturer but rather an online retailer that focuses on selling other companies' socks made in North America. Their range of socks is manufactured in Alabama, and they offer reasonably-priced sock packs for less than $10, with sections dedicated to various socks, like athletic socks, socks for boots, thermal socks for winter, and even diabetic socks.
Novelty socks lovers are also sure to find items they love there. They only offer the best one can buy, and although they don't have their own quality control department and rely on the manufacturers, Socks4Life insists on only delivering American goods.
Made in the USA: Goodwear USA Clothing
Every step of the manufacturing and supply process is all-American at Goodwear USA — a domestic clothing brand known for high-quality, lightweight shirts and sweatshirts for men and women. The cotton the company uses is verified to be American-grown, and their apparel typically doesn't exceed $100.
This means that they can ensure a certain level of sustainability as well as affordability. In an era when the majority of our goods are produced, stored, and shipped from Asian countries, it is almost rare to find all-American clothing. Goodwear USA Clothing is one of our best names on the market, and let's keep it that way.
Made in the USA: Burt's Bees
Straight out of North Carolina, Burt's Bees sells about 200 skin and hair-care products. All of Burt's Bees lip balms have the best ingredients in them, so they tend to be a little on the pricier side! Focusing on natural, environmentally friendly ingredients and recyclable packaging, their products are carefully crafted, so it's no wonder that Burt's Bees is a favorite.
Unlike clothing, when it comes to our bodies, there is no room for compromise, and only the best will do. The few extra dollars we spend when choosing an all-American brand are worth the effort, and the results (and feelings) are instantly seen.
Made in the USA: Louisville Sluggers
While baseballs are no longer being manufactured in the US, at least some baseball bats still are - all thanks to Lousiville Sluggers! Louisville Sluggers may have been sold to a company in Finland, but they are very much still a part of America as their bats are made in Kentucky, and this includes all their signature wooden models.
Playing the old ball game with a ball manufactured elsewhere is one thing, but when it comes to the bat, that's where we draw our red line. We have a feeling that teams that use foreign bats are those placed at the bottom of the league.
Made in the USA: Benjamin Moore Paint
Anyone who has ever had to paint a wall or two will hear a Home Depot employee recommending Benjamin Moore. Founded in 1883 by an Irish immigrant in Brooklyn, Benjamin Moore now operates in several locations throughout New Jersey that collectively make more than 3,500 colors. So yeah, whatever paint you'd like to have on your walls, they have it.
Owned by Berkshire Hathaway, Benjamin Moore's products are famous for their pristine quality and are regarded as being one of the best quality paints on the market. Like many other all-American brands, Benjamin Moore is known for uncompromising goods and remaining loyal to the homeland.
Made Overseas: Etch A Sketch
Etch A Sketch is another toy most children in America grew up with, the idea for it was actually invented in France and then bought by Ohio Art Co. Made Overseas: Converse
The loved Converse tennis shoes began in 1908 and became a fashion icon among pro-skaters and other street style lovers. Though Converse is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, they don’t manufacture their shoes in the USA. The company was sold to Nike in 2003, and production was moved overseas that same year.
Today, these colorful sneakers are made in Chinese and Indonesian factories. Though their branding has been to sell footwear that is “all-American,” they are not truly American-produced shoes. Don’t be surprised if you see just as many people wearing Converse shoes in China and Indonesia as you do in America.
Sold Overseas: Forbes
Forbes Media has had a tremendous influence on its American viewers through its digital media, print, and television outlets. The media giant reportedly reaches 75 million people each month. Forbes was sold to a Hong Kong investment group (Integrated Whale Media) in 2014, though their headquarters are still located in New York, and Steve Forbes remains the editor-in-chief.
In explaining the international sale, Forbes announced on their blog that they were shifting from print to digital content (which is not surprising), most likely in an effort to gain an even larger audience. To this day, Forbes remains a reliable source of information concerning the richest people on this planet.
Made Overseas: New Balance
Though New Balance, the well-known athletic shoe brand, claims to be an American company, the shoes are actually made overseas. You've been walking the streets so proud of your American gear when, in fact, it's not all that at all despite the headquarters being in Oregon. Though they claim to have an American design, even new models aren't 100% made of American-sourced materials.
In fact, New Balance materials are mostly sourced from overseas, including their outer soles, which are manufactured in China. The shoes are labeled “made in the USA,” but there are many qualities of New Balance shoes that are not all-American.
Made Overseas: Dirt Devil
The Dirt Devil hand vacuum was created in 1984 by Royal Appliance Manufacturing. For decades, Americans have relied on this powerful vacuum to keep their homes clean. Now they have likely moved on to Roombas and iRobots. Dirt Devil is based in Charlotte, North Carolina but was bought by the Chinese manufacturer TTI in 2013.
China reportedly makes most of TTI’s products, including Hoover and Dirt Devil vacuum cleaners. So, though the headquarters might be in the U.S., today, the vacuums are most certainly made in China. They have several competitors in the industry, however, they are all made in the same place.
Made Overseas: Nike
Nike is certainly one of the most popular and iconic brands for both athletes and non-athletes alike, and in recent years it has even become more popular, with sports clothes becoming another word for casual. While the products have represented American style and athleticism for decades, China is making most of them.
Most of Nike’s shoes are made in overseas factories located in China and Vietnam. But when outsourcing labor overseas, it can be difficult for an American company to ensure ethical workplace standards outside of the United States. Most recently, it was reported that Nike products were being made under forced labor at one of their Chinese manufacturing plants.
Made Overseas: Ray-Bans
Ray-Ban sunglasses were founded by Bausch & Lomb in 1937. The sunglasses have become another iconic American brand and became especially popular after they were worn by Tom Cruise in the film "Risky Business". But despite gracing American faces for so many years, Ray-Bans are not even made in America.
Bausch & Lomb sold the company to Luxoticca in 1999, which moved the production of Ray-Bans to an Italian factory. Gradually, more factories were opened outside of Italy, including locations in China. Today, the best way to make sure you have American-made sunglasses is to buy vintage Bausch & Lomb frames.
Made Overseas: iPads and iPhones
You are sure to have at least one model of one of these two at home. Headquartered in Cupertino, California, Apple is certainly one of the most beloved brands in the United States and worldwide, and it is also one of the most associated brands with America. But the brand that started in the U.S. actually has China manufacture its iPhones and iPads.
While inexpensive labor may be a factor for Apple’s overseas production, they also have their products made there for a very unusual reason. Reportedly, the creation of iPads and iPhones requires rare earth elements (such as copper, gold, and silver), and China controls 97% of the earth’s supply of these elements.
Made Overseas: Tesla
Tesla, the pioneer in American electric vehicles, has been applauded for its brilliance in both green technology and design. The company is headquartered in the United States, but the CEO, Elon Musk, decided to create a production factory in Shanghai, China.
Tesla still maintains its production plant in Fremont, California, and although it has been touted as one of the “most American” cars, only about 50 percent of the parts are made in America. As of today, Tesla is worth more than $650 Billion, making it one of the biggest American names that are made outside of the United States.
Made Overseas: Motorola
Some years ago, Motorola was the number one phone manufacturer, alongside Ericcson, and these were the days before Samsung and Apple became what they are. No iPhones or Galaxies in sight. It is challenging to find products that are truly made in America, and with cell phones, it’s nearly impossible.
The company was founded by brothers Paul and Joseph Galvin in 1928, who initially named it Galvin Manufacturing Corporation, and has obviously changed and grown since. In 2014, Lenovo, a Chinese smartphone producer, bought the company. While Motorola’s headquarters are at least still in Midwestern America (Chicago, Illinois), like so many other products, their manufacturing takes place in Chinese and even Indian factories.
Sold Overseas: Segway Inc
Segway, the futuristic-looking self-balancing electric scooter, was first released in 2002. Segway scooters soon became a popular way for tourists to explore new places and even for security guards to get around easier. Segway is still based in New Hampshire but unfortunately struggled in the American market. There are Segways all over the world, and it has become part of the international dictionary.
Because of the struggles, the company was passed through several owners until it was sold in 2015 to Ninebot, a Shanghai-based tech company that produces short-distance motorized transport devices. As of 2023, the company is worth a little over $75 million.
Made Overseas: LL Bean
LL Bean, the brand known for its outdoor gear and apparel, has supplied Americans with what they need to venture into the wild since 1912. The company is located in Freeport, Maine, where they manufacture their signature boots, outdoor apparel, and household items. While they do make many of their products in the USA, they also have factories in China, India, Mexico, and other overseas locations.
All American Reviews states that LL Bean does, in fact, manufacture many of its products in the U.S. (about 425 out of 5000 products), but this makes their American-made products less than 10% of their production line.
Made Overseas: American Girl Dolls
With a company name like American Girl, you would think the brand would be made entirely in America. But in fact, the varied collection of American Girl dolls are manufactured in China. The company originally made the dolls from their base in Middleton, Wisconsin, before being bought by the big toy brand Mattel in 1998. Today, Mattel makes most American Girl products in Chinese factories, including their doll clothes.
So if you are looking for a real American girl doll, you will have to look elsewhere. We supposed the term American is all about the personality and characteristics of the doll and not necessarily where it's made. Ye, right.
Sold Overseas: Uber
Uber has become the 21st-century definition of a cab (or a Taxi, if you wish). San Francisco-based Uber founders Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, first developed the concept for Uber after sharing the cost of a ride with a friend. Their company has changed the way we view the world of private transportation since its beginning in 2009.
Eventually, Uber was sold to its Chinese rival, Didi Chuxing, in 2016. Why sell to a rival? Well, CNBC reported that Uber had been losing $1 billion a year to Didi Chuxing and could no longer compete with the Chinese transport company.
Made Overseas: Craftsman States
Anyone who has done some handyman work knows this famous brand. The Craftsman brand has long-represented American ideals of quality and durability in the tools, lawn equipment, and work clothing they have produced. Department store giant, Sears, carried Craftsman products up until 2017. After that, the brand was bought by Stanley Black and Decker.
Since being bought by Black and Decker, many Craftsman products are now manufactured outside of the United States. All American Reviews reported that Apex Tool Group makes many of Craftsman’s hand tools and assembles them in China, but a select few are still made in America.
Made Overseas: Gillette Razors
Made in Boston, Massachusetts, Gillette Razors ran a bold ad campaign featuring their “Made in Boston” heritage. Not only was this an American product, but it was important for the brand to emphasize the fact that it was Bostonian too. Today, some of Gillette’s parts are manufactured in the US, while some of their product parts come from China.
They even receive many of their batteries and handles from other overseas locations, including Mexico and Poland. So, not only is Gillette made all over the world, but it is also used all over the world. Consider it during your next shave.
Made Overseas: Calvin Klein
Known for its clean silhouettes and casual glamour (not to mention its high-profile spokespeople), Calvin Klein was born in New York City in 1968. Although Calvin Klein ads have been plastered across the United States with the faces of celebrities like Justin Bieber and Kendall Jenner, the fashion label receives most of its materials from China.
Certain specialty materials, such as their leather, come from Italy, but most of their other materials are outsourced from China, as their clothing tags clearly state. So, the brand is America, however, it is produced anywhere, and thankfully the presenters are all stripes and stars.
Made Overseas: Oakley Sunglasses
Oakley sunglasses contain a “Made in the USA” label, but the brand has created some controversy about where their goods are actually manufactured. Initially, it was thought that the label indicated that they were made in the United States, however, there are other speculations.
Headquartered in Foothill Ranch, California, Oakley was bought by Luxottica in 2007, which moved some of its production to a Chinese factory. It was finally revealed that 70 percent of Oakley’s parts are made in the USA, which is a respectable percentage, but that still leaves a weighty 30 percent that is outsourced from other countries.
Sold Overseas: Spotify
Digital music listening platform, Spotify, allows users access to millions of songs and albums as well as customized channels to suit individual tastes. All within the comfort of their own smartphone. Such simple creation that anyone could have thought of, except no one did.
In 2013, Tech Crunch noted that the music platform announced a share swap with China-based company Tencent Music Entertainment. True, the product is not tangible, but in plain language, this means that Spotify is now partially owned by China. So, as it turns out, the only thing Americans left from Spotify are the artists listed on it.
Made Overseas: Hush Puppies Shoes
Hush Puppies shoes have been an American staple since 1957 due to their comfort and classic style. The Hush Puppies brand is owned by Wolverine Worldwide and has headquarters in Rockford, Michigan. The brand became famous for selling comfort. They never said they had better-looking shoes or attractive prices, they emphasized the comfort of their goods, which was incomparable.
Unfortunately, the beloved leather shoes are not manufactured in Michigan but are instead produced in a Chinese factory. Still, Hush Puppies shoes remain beloved by many Americans to this day. The brand operates in over 130 countries and shows no signs of stopping.
Made Overseas: Huffy Bikes
Huffy Bikes have been headquartered in Ohio since 1887. Huffy was revolutionary in their development of a convertible bike in 1949 with the first-ever training wheels for children. To this day, the brand is considered one of the best products designated for children, however, they have a long way to go when it comes to competing against the big boy bikes.
Many bike models and years later, Huffy sadly closed two of its U.S.-based factories, moving their production to China in 1999. Huffy also has factories in Mexico and Taiwan, with 70% of its materials coming from these off-shore locations.
Made Overseas: Fisher-Price Toys
Toy brand, Fisher-Price, has filled homes for years with its wide variety of toys for kids of many ages. Fisher-Price falls under the umbrella of the larger toy brand, Mattel, which outsources production from Chinese factories. Disturbingly, the brand has had to issue many recalls of their toys made by Chinese vendors in 2007 and in 2020 due to dangerously high levels of lead.
The company has since promised to regain its customers' confidence once again. They are globally known for the best lie of products, Little People toys, which delivers various play sets such as a house, school, garage, and more.
Made Overseas: Harley-Davidson
Harley-Davidson is another brand that personifies the quintessential rugged, free-spirit American. The motorcycle brand was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1903 and was one of two automotive brands that managed to survive the Great Depression. Despite the success, Harley-Davidson motorcycles did not remain a fully American-made product.
Today, though they have plants in Wisconsin, Missouri, and Pennsylvania, the company shocked many of its loyal customers when, in 2018, it moved its production overseas. Today, many of their electric components are made in China. It used to be the biggest motorbike manufacturer in the world, operating in more than 60 countries.
Made Overseas: Melissa & Doug Toys
Melissa & Doug toys are a favorite of consumers for their classic, wooden designs and bright colors. But if you’re looking for American-made toys, Melissa & Doug will unfortunately disappoint. The toy company is headquartered in Connecticut, but they manufacture the toy parts in China. What’s more disturbing is that their toys were found to pose potential health risks.
In both 2008 and 2009, there was a recall of 26,000 of their toys due to the discovery of excessive levels of barium in the surface paint. So, when it comes to purchasing safe toys for your kids, it may be better to buy them closer to home!
Made Overseas: Barbie Dolls
Barbie dolls are some of the most iconic toys not only in America but across the globe. The dolls were originally conceptualized by Ruth Handler to be a 3-D version of a paper doll. Today, the Barbie doll has come a long way from the simple fashion doll.
Now, Barbie dolls are doctors, scientists, athletes, and businesswomen who represent the “American dream” for many young girls. But these “American dream” dolls were never made in America. They were first manufactured in Japan in 1959. And today, being owned by outsourcing giant Mattel, Barbies are made in Chinese, Malaysian, and Indonesian factories.
Made Overseas: Radio Flyer
The cherry-red Radio Flyer Wagon has become a symbol of an idyllic childhood in America. Radio Flyer wagons were originally made in Chicago, but after the company changed their materials from the original metal to lighter, cheaper plastic, they began outsourcing and began to produce out of the country.
The Chicago factory could not create the plastic parts, so in 2004, the company turned to none other than China. Today, though some of Radio Flyer’s products are still made in the Midwestern U.S., around two-thirds are made in China. Amongst other products, Red Flyer also produces scooters, tricycles, and ride-on.
Made in the USA: Little Tikes Cozy Coupe
Though China produces some of the parts, Little Tikes Cozy Coupe (the toy car for toddlers) is manufactured in Hudson, Ohio. The founder of Little Tikes, Thomas Murdough Jr., originally started the company in Ohio in 1969, and it was one of the first plastic toy cars sold in the United States.
It was considered The Best Selling Car" for more than a decade, leaving Honda Accord behind. The fact that the company remains in the USA over 50 years later is truly remarkable, considering how many companies have factories overseas. The Little Tikes website even features a section devoted to their toys that are made in America.
Made in the USA: Pyrex Glassware
Pyrex glassware is known to be a versatile and aesthetic way to prepare, bake, and store food in the kitchen. The Pyrex brand features a variety of products, from measuring cups to mixing bowls, and has been a staple in American kitchens since its founding in 1915.
As it turns out, the actual glass Pyrex uses is unique, which differentiates this line of products from all others. The sturdy glassware is actually made in Corning, New York, and in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. So you can bake your next casserole with full confidence that your Pyrex glassware was made in the USA.

Zippo lighters were first manufactured in 1933 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and have even become collector’s items today. They first became popular during World War II, representing the steely grit of the US Military. The good news is that Zippo is still made in the USA.
Another interesting fact is that the company also provides jobs to inmates (who assemble the lighters) while they are serving their time. It is known as "the windproof" lighter, meaning the flame will keep on going even under the worst weather conditions. One fault through, it's almost impossible to simply blow out the flame. Parents may be happy to hear that Crayola Crayons are entirely made in the USA. In fact, the factory in Easton, Pennsylvania, makes over 3 billion crayons per year and around 650 crayons per minute.
The brand has over 200 hundred shades of color that have been produced in wide assortments, and it became a huge hit when it came u with an innovative and cheap way to combine safe color pigment with paraffin wax.
Made in the USA: Post-It Notes
The 3M company did not start making the simple yet life-changing Post-It Notes until 1977. The product was created by accident by 3M employees Art Fry and Dr. Spencer Silver. The two, who were trying to create an aircraft-building adhesive, realized they may have had a new product on their hands.
The handy notes that now demonstrate American creativity and ingenuity have been made in Cynthiana, Kentucky, since 1985. Never in a million years did they think that a small piece of paper, in all colors of the rainbow, would become such a great success and even be copied by other companies.

KitchenAid is known for creating durable, multi-purpose kitchen tools, like their famous stand mixers that come in a rainbow of colors. KitchenAid has been made in Greenville, Ohio, since 1941. Along with the stand mixer, they also make other small appliances. Though the brand outsources a few of its parts from China, its primary manufacturing plants are in South Carolina, Ohio, Arkansas, Indiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi.

Coolers have become an essential item for any situation where a refrigerator is needed but not available. The famous Igloo cooler brand began creating coolers in 1947, and they are still made in Katy, Texas, today. According to the Igloo website, the coolers are made in a 1.8 million-square-foot, three-building facility.
Truly capturing the individualistic spirit of America, the brand has branched out from the simple cooler to now feature special sizes, prints, and designs so you can make your cooler all your own. To this day, people still have the Igloo Coolers they purchased more than 20 years ago, proving how good quality this product is.
Made in the USA: Hershey’s Chocolate
There's Godiva, there's Cadburys, there's Nestle, and there is Mars, however, none of them is anything like our favorite American candy brand. The Hershey brand has become synonymous with quality Chocolate since 1900. And for well over 100 years, the delicious confection has mostly been made in America, justifying its reputation.
For decades, the American public has enjoyed Hershey’s chocolate bars, chocolate syrup, peanut butter cups, and, of course, chocolate kisses. The Hershey Company does have a handful of production plants in Brazil and Mexico but is still headquartered in Hershey, Pennsylvania. They also have production plants in multiple U.S. locations.
Made in the USA: Slinky
Intended to be a metal part for warships, the original Slinky toy was first invented in 1943 by Richard James. It is pretty remarkable that an object once created for war became a beloved children’s toy. The invention was hardly a fad and became a highly entertaining toy that has delighted generations. The metal Slinkies were first sold in New York, and today, the plastic Slinkies are made in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and Plymouth, Michigan.
The Slinky is also named Spring and was the inspiration behind other huge hit toys like the Slinky Train and the Slinky Dog. To this day, the metal (or plastic) spring entertains thousands of children around the world during hours of boredom.

Few things speak to the American soul more than exploring the open road. Since 1952, the Airstream brand has captured that American essence in its trailers. The trailers are not only highly functional, providing many of the comforts of home while traveling, but also have a classic, high-shine design.

Lodge Cast Iron is not only made in the USA, but it is also a family-owned business. Lodge Cast Iron boasts lifetime durability for its products. Since 1911, Whirlpool has been supplying American households with essential appliances. Headquartered in Benton Charter Township, Michigan, Whirlpool makes everything from refrigerators to dishwashers. They also have factories in Tennessee, Ohio, and Oklahoma. According to All American Reviews, Whirlpool employs 28,000 Americans and is also a part of the Maytag and Roper brands.
In 1948 Whirlpool introduced the very first automatic washing machine and saved us all time like no appliance before. This was a significant change in life, and washing clothes never looked the same. The brand has won numerous innovation awards which we all enjoy to this day.
Made in the USA: Hallmark Greeting Cards
If you have celebrated anything in life (be it for yourself or for other people), you have either purchased or gotten a Hallmark greeting card. Hallmark, the greeting card mega-franchise, has been confronted with some confusion as to where they make their cards. Hallmark finally addressed this lack of clarity, stating that while they do receive some of their gift items from China, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka, most of their greeting cards are made in the USA.
The card company is headquartered in Westlake, Ohio, and has production centers in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kentucky, among other U.S. locations. Hallmark Greeting Cards operate in more than 100 countries alongside its branded stores.

A staple for nearly every barbeque, holiday, or family event, Lays potato chips have become one of the most American snack foods. Owned by Frito-Lay, the chips are made from potatoes that are sourced from 120 different farms. The brand can be found all over the world, from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
